About us
Thank you for visiting the homepage of Belgian Chocolate Design. Come and meet us, Axel and Lothar Hanf. We hand-make finest chocolates and pralines with the special touch, based on Belgian chocolate made of 100% cocoa butter.
We live and work here in Belgium's German-speaking community. We grew up speaking the typical Eifel dialect. In this area of ours, both the Germanic and the Roman culture are at home and we feel ourselves belonging to both worlds. We are committed to the tradition of Belgian chocolatiers, but our ties are just as strong to the German part of the Eifel and to Luxembourg. That’s why we are strong supporters of the vision of a Europe of regions spanning country borders.

Lothar Hanf“My brother Axel loves the creative freedom and the countless opportunities offered by true unadulterated chocolate. As a mâitre chocolatier, this valuable gift from nature is a continual source of inspiration to him, with its texture, aroma and taste loved by adults and children alike. Axel is a born talent when it comes to working with chocolate. He has such a feel for it, such a passion for this truly noble material. In this field of hand-made chocolates steeped in tradition he is managing to move into uncharted territory. The special thing about Belgian Chocolate Design is that we are moving into this territory without sacrificing anything of our high standards with regard to creativity, individuality and hand-made perfection. At the fingertips of my brother, the mâitre chocolatier Axel Hanf, masterful chocolate designs are transformed into delicious reality. Not without reason, we are regarded as specialists for incomparable creations and compositions requiring the highest skill in working with this noble material.

Axel loves best to work with top-quality single-origin chocolate, whose character, just like wine, is dictated by the soil and climate of the regions where the beans are grown. This means that he is able to establish perfect harmony between the chocolate shell and the filling.”

Axel Hanf“Lothar and I started up Belgian Chocolate Design in 2007. Following a long international assignment, Lothar, with his 20 years of international experience in management, had come back to his roots. Within just a short time he was able to build up Belgian Chocolate Design into a well-known company in the English-, French- and German-speaking countries, with business links from London to Berlin. If it wasn’t for him, Belgian Chocolate Design would not have seen its rapid growth and I would not have had the freedom to invest more time working on new chocolate and praline creations. He takes care of the whole business side so that I can focus my complete attention on my job as mâitre chocolatier. But I also just like working together with him – it’s that unspoken feeling of understanding and trust between brothers.”
